Voting for the new Liberal leader has begun. Here’s how the process works
Voting in the Liberal leadership contest to select Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s successor is now open. Registered Liberals have until March 9 at 3 p.m. ET to cast their vote, with the expectation that the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada will be announced later that day.
To participate in the leadership contest, eligible voters must have registered as a Liberal before 5 p.m. ET on Jan. 27, 2025. The Liberal Party has sent Voter IDs by email to those who met the registration deadline. If you have not received your Voter ID, you can request it online by filling out a short form with your email, first name, postal code, and date of birth.
Once you have your Voter ID, you can confirm your eligibility by entering it along with your postal code, date of birth, and phone number in the party’s online confirmation tool. After confirming your eligibility, you must verify your identity using the Canada Post Identity+ mobile app or in person at a participating post office.
The Canada Post Identity+ mobile app guides users through the identity verification process step by step. You will need to enter your email address, receive a verification code, capture your picture, upload a photo of your ID card, and prove your Canadian citizenship with a passport or other identity documents.
Once your identity has been confirmed and an Identity+ ID created, you submit all the information to the Liberal Party for final verification. Once your identity and Voter ID are confirmed, you will receive an email with instructions on how to cast your ballot electronically.
The Liberal Party has made it easy for registered Liberals to participate in the leadership contest and ensure that their votes are counted. Make sure to verify your eligibility, confirm your identity, and cast your ballot before the deadline to have a say in selecting the next leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.
