US Election 2024

Bipartisan group of lawmakers pass resolution to overturn Biden-era regulation on water heaters

A resolution was passed in the House on Thursday, with the support of some House Democrats and Republicans, to block a regulation put in place during the Biden administration regarding household appliances. The Department of Energy (DOE) had announced a rule in the final days of former President Joe Biden’s term that aimed to ban non-condensing, natural-gas-fired water heaters by 2029. However, this rule now faces challenges after the resolution was passed in the House, with every House Republican and 11 Democrats voting in favor of overturning the regulation.

Rep. Gary Palmer, R-Ala., who introduced the Congressional Review Act (CRA) in January, emphasized the need to restore a quality of life that was enjoyed before the Democratic Party took over the White House, House, and Senate. He argued that the American people are tired of being dictated on what to buy, wear, and use, and the resolution aims to give them more control over their choices.

The owner of a tankless water heater manufacturing facility, Frank Windsor, expressed concerns about the potential impact of the new rule on jobs. He warned that hundreds of jobs could be at risk if the ban on efficient water heating technology goes into effect, as it does not align with consumer interests.

House Republicans are actively working to introduce resolutions that would overturn various regulations put in place by the Biden administration, particularly focusing on household appliances. Another resolution passed in the House aimed at reversing the Biden-era Environmental Protection Agency’s Methane Emissions and Waste Reduction Incentive Program.

While a Democrat-led resolution to reverse President Donald Trump’s executive order on declaring an “energy emergency” failed to pass in the Senate, the efforts to challenge and reverse certain regulations continue to be a point of contention in Congress.

The decisions made in Congress will have far-reaching impacts on consumers, industries, and the economy as a whole. The resolution passed in the House marks a significant step in the ongoing battle over energy and environmental policies in the United States.
