GOP fights back against ‘Trump-proof’ sanctuary jurisdictions

Republicans are pushing back against so-called sanctuary cities and jurisdictions as President Donald Trump ramps up plans for mass deportations. During a House Oversight Committee hearing on Wednesday, Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., accused mayors of sanctuary cities of actively working to harm the American people they represent, stating that they have “blood on their hands.”

The mayors of four sanctuary cities – Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York City – were singled out for their policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities, particularly by not honoring ICE detainer requests. These sanctuary jurisdictions have come under fire for releasing dangerous criminal illegal aliens back onto the streets, leading to multiple high-profile crimes committed by illegal immigrants.

House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chair James Comer, R-Ky., emphasized the need for sanctuary mayors to explain their policies that jeopardize public safety and violate federal immigration law. California, a state known for its sanctuary policies, was notably absent from the hearing, but has faced challenges in enforcing federal immigration laws due to legislation like SB 54.

San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond highlighted the limitations imposed by SB 54, which prevent local law enforcement agencies in California from assisting with federal immigration enforcement efforts. Some jurisdictions in California have gone even further by imposing additional barriers to hinder immigration enforcement, making it difficult for law enforcement to report criminals to ICE.

Despite these obstacles, Trump administration officials like Tom Homan have vowed to continue the fight against sanctuary cities, with Homan stating that federal authorities will persist in their efforts to arrest individuals who are in the country illegally. Trump’s GOP allies in Congress have also joined the pushback against sanctuary policies, underscoring the dangers posed by these policies and the crimes committed by individuals who are in the country illegally.

As the debate over sanctuary cities continues, the Trump administration and its allies are determined to uphold federal immigration laws and ensure the safety and security of all Americans. The issue of sanctuary cities remains a contentious and divisive topic, with both sides advocating for their respective positions on how best to address illegal immigration in the United States.
