Drug that could be ‘more toxic than fentanyl’ being sold in northern B.C.

Warning: Toxic Drug Found in Northern B.C. Region

Northern Health has issued a warning about a dangerous drug that is being sold in northern British Columbia. The health authority has identified round white pills that have tested positive for the synthetic opioid sotonitazene or “nitazene,” which is said to be equal or even more toxic than fentanyl.

The alert was issued on Thursday and the pills in question have been found to be sold as oxycocet, a prescription pain reliever. It is important to note that this toxic drug cannot be detected using fentanyl strips, making it even more dangerous for unsuspecting users.

Nitazenes were originally created in the 1950s as potential pain relievers, but they were never approved for clinical use. Despite this, they have found their way into recreational drug supplies in countries like the United States, Canada, and various European nations since 2019.

One of the concerning aspects of nitazenes is the lack of information about how the human body reacts to these chemicals. Since they have never undergone clinical trials, scientists have limited knowledge about their effects on the body.

If someone has ingested this toxic drug, they may require naloxone as a treatment. However, a higher dosage of naloxone may be needed to counteract the effects of nitazenes. It is crucial for drug users to be aware of the risks and to have a plan in place in case of an overdose.

It is strongly advised not to use drugs alone and to have access to naloxone or emergency services in case of an overdose. Stay informed and stay safe.
