The pandemic didn’t end for this P.E.I. woman, who wants more support for those with long COVID

Just over two years ago, Nikkie Gallant’s life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with post-COVID condition, also known as “long COVID.” Since the fall of 2022, the Prince Edward Island musician has been struggling with debilitating symptoms that have drastically changed her daily routine.
Simple tasks like sitting up in bed or going to the sink for a glass of water have become exhausting for Gallant. She often has to cancel plans to leave the house due to the overwhelming fatigue that accompanies her condition. Describing her experience, Gallant compares herself to a battery that never fully charges, constantly feeling drained of energy.
At her worst, Gallant could barely sit up and had a small window of time each day where she could manage to stay upright. Despite some improvement, she still faces challenges in her day-to-day life. Fatigue, shortness of breath, and brain fog are common symptoms of long COVID, impacting individuals in varying ways.
Gallant considers herself fortunate to have support from her mother, insurance benefits to cover medical costs, and a custom wheelchair that provides her with some independence. While she believes her health is gradually improving, she acknowledges that some patients experience stagnant or worsening symptoms over time.
Managing long COVID is a complex and ongoing process, with no known cure. Self-care practices and certain medications can help alleviate some symptoms, but the condition is not easily predictable or treatable for everyone. The lack of definitive answers and treatment options can be frustrating for individuals like Gallant, who are navigating life with long COVID.
Despite the challenges she faces, Gallant remains determined to pursue her passion for music. While she has had to put concerts on hold and adapt her guitar playing technique due to her physical limitations, she has found ways to continue doing what she loves in shorter intervals. Speaking out about her experience, Gallant hopes to raise awareness about long COVID and advocate for more research and rehabilitation options for those affected by the condition.
As the world moves forward from the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to remember that for individuals like Gallant, the impact of the virus continues to be a significant part of their daily lives. By sharing her story, Gallant emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and addressing the challenges posed by long COVID, urging for greater support and understanding for those living with the condition.
