Shari Franke, the eldest daughter of disgraced Utah parenting blogger Ruby Franke, has taken a stand to protect other children by championing a new child actor law in her home state. Utah Governor Spencer Cox recently signed the bill, HB322, which Shari helped promote. This bill aims to provide payment and privacy protections to minors involved in entertainment, including traditional acting and social media content creation.
In an Instagram post from February, Shari Franke shared her efforts in drafting HB322 to safeguard child influencers in Utah. The bill mandates parents to establish a trust fund for their children and pay them a minimum amount. Additionally, it grants child influencers the right, upon turning 18, to have any content they appeared in removed from all social media platforms. Despite facing opposition from certain family bloggers and lobbyists in Utah, Shari remains steadfast in her advocacy for children’s rights.
This initiative is part of Shari’s ongoing efforts to ensure the well-being of children whose parents are social media influencers, especially in light of her mother Ruby Franke’s legal troubles. Ruby Franke, along with her accomplice Jodi Hildebrandt, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of child abuse in 2023 and was sentenced to years in prison.
Utah State Representative Doug Owens, who sponsored HB322, explained the bill’s key provisions. It mandates parents to set aside 15% of their children’s earnings for future use and provides protections for children in social media content. Moreover, it allows individuals to request the removal of content that may be deemed embarrassing or emotionally damaging once they reach adulthood.
The case of Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt has shed light on the darker side of parenting and lifestyle blogs, where reality may be distorted for the sake of online content. As the duo faces the consequences of their actions, discussions surrounding children’s rights and privacy in the realm of social media continue to evolve.
Shari Franke’s memoir, “The House of My Mother,” delves into her experiences growing up in the shadow of her mother’s online persona and her relentless pursuit of justice for herself and her siblings. Through her advocacy work and personal story, Shari is making strides towards a better future for children in the world of entertainment and social media.
