New mosque officially opens in former Catholic Church as Eid celebrations begin

Muslims in Newfoundland and Labrador gathered on Sunday to mark the end of Ramadan and celebrate a new beginning for their community. The morning prayers for Eid-al-fitr were held in the newly renovated mosque, which was once the Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church on Torbay Road in St. John’s. The President of the Muslim Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, Haseen Khan, estimated that around 6,000 people attended the prayer sessions, making it a significant day for the Muslim community.

Khan expressed the excitement and joy felt by the community at having a place to pray together as one group. The mosque was purchased in December, and extensive renovations were carried out to ensure it was ready for Eid, a sacred time in the Muslim calendar. Eid marks the end of a month of fasting, a period of self-discipline and spiritual growth. Khan emphasized the importance of Eid as one of the five pillars of Islam.

The celebration of Eid in the new mosque holds special significance for the community, as it signifies a new chapter in their religious practice. The unity and diversity within the Muslim community were on full display during the prayer sessions. Khan highlighted the spiritual unity shared by all Muslims, regardless of cultural differences.

The attendees, like Hady Ghoneim, expressed their appreciation for the sense of acceptance and love within the community. Ghoneim noted the beauty of people from different backgrounds coming together to worship and practice their faith. The former church’s transformation into a mosque was seen as a continuation of its purpose as a place of worship.
