Ovechkin scores 892nd NHL goal, moving within 3 of breaking Gretzky’s record

Alex Ovechkin made history by scoring his 892nd career goal, bringing him within three goals of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record. However, it was rookie Jackson Blake who stole the show, scoring twice to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 5-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.

In addition to Blake’s impressive performance, Logan Stankoven, Seth Jarvis, and Sean Walker also found the back of the net for the Hurricanes, who secured a playoff spot for the seventh consecutive season, matching a franchise record. Goalie Frederik Andersen was solid between the pipes, stopping 20 of 21 shots to earn his seventh consecutive win for Carolina.

Ovechkin managed to score a goal on a 5-on-3 power play late in the second period, cutting Carolina’s lead to 4-1. The Capitals’ star now has 39 goals this season and has been on a hot streak with 17 goals in the past 25 games.

Unfortunately for Washington, goalie Logan Thompson struggled in the first period, giving up three goals before leaving the game at intermission due to an upper-body injury. Charlie Lindgren stepped in as his replacement and made 18 saves for the Capitals.

The highlight of the game was undoubtedly Ovechkin’s milestone goal, which showcased his scoring prowess and determination to chase down Gretzky’s record. The Capitals may have fallen short in this game, but Ovechkin’s historic achievement will be remembered for years to come.

Overall, the Carolina Hurricanes put on a dominant performance to secure a crucial win and punch their ticket to the playoffs once again. With a talented roster and strong goaltending from Andersen, the Hurricanes will be a team to watch as they look to make a deep playoff run.
