A Chinese humanoid robot lands the world’s first front flip

Zhongqing Robotics, also known as EngineAI, has made a significant mark in the field of humanoid robotics by releasing a video showcasing what they claim to be the world’s first humanoid robot front flip. While robot backflips have become more common, executing a front flip is a much more challenging task that requires precise balance and control throughout the rotation.
Unlike humans, robots rely on sensor data and motor control to perform complex movements like a front flip. The robot must quickly shift its weight, adjust its center of gravity, and coordinate its limb movements to ensure a smooth landing. EngineAI’s PM01 robot has successfully overcome this challenge by programming it to gather enough force to spin forward while calculating the correct angular velocity and torque.
The PM01 robot is equipped with impressive specs, including five degrees of freedom in each arm and six per leg, totaling 23 degrees of freedom in body movement. With 221 lb-ft of torque and standing at 4.5 ft tall and weighing 88 lb, the robot manages to execute a front flip with a human-like gait, showcasing its advanced capabilities.
The EngineAI PM01 is a new-generation open-source humanoid robot with elegant aesthetics and dynamic mechanical performance. It features Intel N97 + NVIDIA Jetson Orin dual chips for motion control training codes and deployment codes. The robot offers natural gait walking powered by neural network technology, an interactive core display, and exceptional mobility with full-body degrees of freedom.
Technical specifications of the PM01 include a depth camera, multi-array microphone, interactive core display, and high flexibility at the waist with 320° rotation capability. Each leg has six degrees of freedom, surround-sound 3D speakers, and a high-capacity quick-release battery for long-lasting power. The robot is powered by a dual-chip architecture with Intel N97 + NVIDIA Jetson Orin, showcasing its high-performance capabilities.
Overall, EngineAI’s front-flipping humanoid robot demonstrates the rapid advancements in robotics technology and the potential for robots to perform even more incredible feats in the future. The integration of realistic movement in humanoid robots could play a crucial role in their acceptance and integration into everyday life. The future of robotics holds exciting possibilities, and EngineAI is at the forefront of innovation in this field.
