Andreescu’s impressive run at Italian Open ends with 4th-round loss to Zhang

Bianca Andreescu’s Impressive Run at the Italian Open Comes to an End
Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu’s journey at the Italian Open tennis tournament concluded on Monday with a tough loss to Qinwen Zhang in the fourth round. Zhang defeated Andreescu with a score of 7-5, 6-1, ending the Mississauga native’s hopes of advancing further in the WTA 1000 clay-court event in Rome.
Andreescu, who had been on a remarkable run in the tournament, was serving for the win in the first set but was unable to close it out as Zhang fought back and secured the victory. The Chinese player’s strong performance continued into the second set, where she scored two more breaks to seal the match in her favor.
Despite the loss, the tournament was a success for Andreescu, who has been making a comeback after a six-month break to focus on her health. The former world No. 4 and 2019 U.S. Open champion showcased her skills by defeating 20th-seed Dora Vekic and 11th-seed Elena Rybakina in Rome. As a result, Andreescu is expected to climb 21 spots in the WTA rankings to reach No. 100.
In other news from the Italian Open, the top-seeded women’s doubles team of Gabriela Dabrowski from Ottawa and Erin Routliffe from New Zealand advanced to the quarterfinals with a walkover. Their opponents, Peyton Stearns and Daria Kasatkina, withdrew from the match after a grueling singles match earlier in the day.
Dabrowski and Routliffe will now face the winner of the upcoming match between sixth-seeded Russians Diana Shnaider and Mirra Andreeva and Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and Mexico’s Giuliana Olmos. The Canadian-New Zealand duo will be looking to continue their strong performance and make a push for the doubles title at the Italian Open.
