Why so many people in Canada seem to be sick right now

Canada’s winter respiratory virus season is currently in full swing, with more people falling ill with the flu and requiring hospitalization compared to previous years. Dr. Karim Ali of Niagara Health in Ontario stated that this flu season has seen the highest amount of influenza cases and severe illness in almost a decade. In Quebec, Dr. Jesse Papenburg noted that one out of every three tests for influenza in the province are coming back positive, indicating the intensity of this year’s flu season.

In the past, 10 to 20 percent of children admitted to pediatric hospitals for influenza required intensive care. However, Dr. Papenburg emphasized the importance of the flu vaccine in protecting children from infection, urging families to get vaccinated as soon as possible. The Public Health Agency of Canada reported that flu activity was widespread in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec, with the flu season typically lasting from November to April.

Dawn Bowdish, a professor at McMaster University, highlighted the national goal of vaccinating 80 percent of vulnerable individuals, such as young children and the elderly, to prevent infection and complications from the flu. While Canada has never reached this target, progress has been made in vaccinating individuals over 65. Additionally, pregnant women and those with underlying health conditions are encouraged to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their newborns.

Dr. Danuta Skowronski of the BC Centre for Disease Control emphasized the importance of vaccination in reducing the risk of flu-related illnesses that require medical attention. Her team’s research found that the flu shot can reduce this risk by about half. This year, a mix of Influenza A subtypes, H1 and H3, are circulating, indicating a potential transition season. Skowronski recommended layering precautions, such as avoiding contact with sick individuals and considering antiviral medications for high-risk individuals.

As the flu season progresses, health officials will continue to monitor vaccine effectiveness and potential variant strains that may impact future vaccine compositions. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, individuals can protect themselves and their communities from the flu’s impact.
