Baby born aboard Newfoundland ferry

The Devoe-Gale family from Codroy Valley, Newfoundland, recently had a memorable experience at sea that they will never forget. Mason Devoe and Lindsey Gale were on a journey from Newfoundland to Cape Breton aboard Marine Atlantic’s Ala’suinu ferry when they found themselves in an unexpected situation. Lindsey, who was 33-weeks pregnant at the time, had decided to join Mason on his trip to the mainland for one last adventure before their baby arrived.

The trip started off smoothly, with calm waters and a peaceful atmosphere. However, in the early hours of the night, Lindsey began to experience what she thought were Braxton Hicks contractions. Despite initially dismissing them, the contractions became more frequent and intense, prompting Mason and Lindsey to seek help from their friend Sherry Scott, who worked on the ferry as the chief storekeeper.

Sherry quickly realized that Lindsey was in labor and sprang into action, contacting the ferry crew for assistance. The crew did everything in their power to help, increasing the vessel’s speed in an attempt to reach land before baby Miley made her entrance into the world. Despite the overwhelming situation, Mason and Lindsey were grateful for the support they received from the crew and medical personnel on board.

When the ferry finally reached port, paramedics were waiting to assist with the delivery. Baby Miley was born on November 1 aboard the Ala’suinu ferry, making her arrival a truly unique and memorable experience. Despite being born on the Nova Scotia side of the crossing, her time of birth was considered to be on Newfoundland Standard Time.
