The Government of Nova Scotia Pushes Forward with Plans for Passenger Rail in Halifax Area

The government of Nova Scotia is taking steps to explore the possibility of implementing a passenger rail system in the Halifax area. A request has been made for qualified consultants to conduct a feasibility study on passenger and light rail transportation.

This initiative is a key component of the recently released regional transport plan, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing public transit options for residents.

Minister of Public Works Fred Tilley expressed optimism about the potential benefits of introducing passenger and light rail services in the province. He emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough feasibility study to ensure that all decisions are evidence-based and tailored to meet the needs of Nova Scotians.

The feasibility study will examine potential regional and urban corridors, propose design concepts for selected routes, and develop a long-term transit strategy to accommodate future growth. Companies have been invited to submit their proposals by September 16.

Implementing a passenger rail system has the potential to revolutionize transportation in Nova Scotia, providing a safe, reliable, and high-capacity mode of transit for residents. The government is committed to exploring this opportunity in a strategic and comprehensive manner to benefit the community as a whole.
