Billy Joel cancels all concerts after brain disorder diagnosis
Legendary American singer-songwriter and pianist Billy Joel made a heartbreaking announcement on Friday, revealing that he has been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a brain disorder. As a result, Joel has been forced to cancel all of his upcoming concerts, including a highly anticipated stop in Toronto.
In a statement shared on social media, the 76-year-old musician explained that he is currently undergoing physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing while he focuses on his recovery. “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience and thank you for understanding,” Joel expressed in the message.
According to the statement, Joel’s condition was worsened by his recent concert performances, leading to issues with his hearing, vision, and balance. Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a condition that is more common in individuals over the age of 65. It occurs when fluid accumulates in the skull and applies pressure on the brain, resulting in symptoms that can mimic those of dementia. In some cases, these symptoms can be reversible through surgery.
The tour, which was set to include 17 stops in the United States, Canada, and England, was originally slated to kick off in February. However, due to an undisclosed medical condition, it was postponed to July before ultimately being cancelled altogether.
Billy Joel, best known for iconic hits such as “Piano Man” and “Uptown Girl,” recently wrapped up an unprecedented monthly residency at Madison Square Garden, which had captivated audiences since 2014.
