Border state Democrat Ruben Gallego backs GOP’s Laken Riley Act ahead of Senate vote

Sen. Ruben Gallego, a Democrat from Arizona, has made headlines by becoming the second Democrat to co-sponsor the Laken Riley Act. This bill, which passed the House on Tuesday, will now head to the Senate floor for a vote on Friday. The Laken Riley Act aims to require Immigration and Customs Enforcement to arrest and detain illegal immigrants who have committed theft, burglary, or shoplifting until they are deported. Additionally, the bill would allow states to take civil action against federal government officials who fail to enforce immigration laws.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Senator Gallego emphasized the importance of addressing the border crisis and ensuring that law enforcement has the tools needed to take action against illegal immigrants who break the law. The bill is named after Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student who was tragically found dead on the University of Georgia campus earlier this year. Her killer, Jose Ibarra, an illegal immigrant, was found guilty of felony murder and sentenced to life without parole.

The Laken Riley Act was re-introduced in Congress by Rep. Mike Collins and Sen. Katie Britt, both Republicans. Senator Britt commended Senator Gallego for co-sponsoring the bipartisan bill, highlighting its potential to keep American families safe. The bill has garnered support from Republicans and Democrats alike, with Senator Gallego joining Senator Fetterman as the bill’s second Democratic co-sponsor.

Senator Gallego’s decision to support the Laken Riley Act comes at a crucial time, as Republicans plan to push the bill through the Senate with their incoming trifecta in Washington. The bill’s fate hinges on securing 60 votes to overcome the legislative filibuster, making the votes of a few key Democrats pivotal. All eyes will be on the Georgia Senate delegation, especially Senator Jon Ossoff, who has his own re-election battle in 2026.
