Calgary man faces four terrorism-related charges following federal police investigation

RCMP says a Calgary man faces four terrorism-related charges following a national investigation.

In a release issued late Friday afternoon, authorities announced that the RCMP Federal Policing Integrated National Security Enforcement Team and the Calgary Police Department had arrested a local resident in connection with terrorist offenses.

Zakarya Rida Hussein, 20, appeared in court on Friday and was charged with two counts of facilitating a terrorist activity in violation of Article 83.19 of the Penal Code.

Police said the man was also charged with two counts of participating in or contributing, directly or indirectly, to an activity of a terrorist group in violation of Article 83.18(1) of the Penal Code.

Hussein was remanded in custody pending a future trial.

RCMP and Calgary Police Department representatives declined to answer questions about the allegations or the man who was arrested.

“As the criminal investigation is ongoing and before the court, the RCMP will not comment further at this time,” the police said in a statement.
