Cameron Bowl goes quiet this summer as Glace Bay preps for 2026 Little League championship

The Cameron Bowl in Glace Bay, N.S., is gearing up to host the 2026 Canadian Little League baseball championship, with expectations of welcoming up to 15,000 spectators. Derrick Hayes, the chair of the championship organizing committee, expressed his excitement about the upcoming event, highlighting the unique amphitheatre setting of the Cameron Bowl that creates an intimate atmosphere for both players and spectators. Recalling past championships that drew crowds of 10,000 to 15,000 people, Hayes emphasized the community’s enthusiasm and support for the tournament.

In preparation for the championship, the Cameron Bowl field is undergoing renovations to enhance accessibility and upgrade facilities. New turf and concrete pads will be installed, and the dugouts will receive a facelift to accommodate the influx of visitors expected during the event. Funding for the renovations is being provided by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, with additional support from the federal government and potential contributions from the provincial government.

Dave MacKeigan, a CBRM councillor and member of the organizing committee, fondly recalled the excitement of the 1988 championship when the Colonels clinched the title on home soil. He described the overwhelming support from the community, with spectators filling every available space to witness the games.
