Canadian chain Peavey Mart warns of imitation scams as it closes all stores

Peavey Mart, a well-known Canadian farm retailer, is in the midst of closing down all its stores nationwide. The closure comes as a result of a challenging retail landscape, with the company citing factors such as record-low consumer confidence, inflationary pressures, rising operating costs, ongoing supply disruptions, and a difficult regulatory environment as contributing to its decision.

Headquartered in Red Deer, Alberta, Peavey Mart has been a staple in rural communities across Canada since its inception in 1967. Originally known as National Farmway, the chain has served as a one-stop shop for farm and ranch supplies, catering to a clientele seeking items related to the rural lifestyle, from fencing to feed. Despite briefly being owned by the Peavey Company of Minneapolis, the retailer returned to Canadian ownership in 1984, proudly asserting that it is “100 per cent Canadian-owned and operated.”

As Peavey Mart embarks on the process of winding down its operations, it is offering steep discounts of up to 30 percent on its remaining inventory through liquidation sales. However, amidst the store closures, the company is cautioning customers about fraudulent websites and Facebook pages that are attempting to capitalize on the situation by stealing personal information.

Fake websites and social media pages impersonating Peavey Mart have emerged, falsely claiming to offer online shopping options. The retailer has made it clear that it does not engage in online sales and that its liquidation discounts are available in-store only. To protect themselves from falling victim to these scams, customers are advised to navigate directly to the official Peavey Mart website using a trusted internet browser or contact a local store to verify any ongoing sales promotions.

Furthermore, Peavey Mart emphasizes that it will never request credit card payments online or over the phone. Customers who suspect they have been targeted by fraudulent activity are encouraged to contact their local RCMP’s non-emergency line for assistance.

The closure of Peavey Mart’s 90 locations nationwide is expected to have a significant impact on rural customers and economies, with community leaders and shoppers expressing concern about the loss of a trusted retailer in their communities. As the company navigates through this challenging period, it remains committed to its Canadian roots and the values that have defined its presence in the farming and ranching industry for over five decades.
