Celtic Colours festival confirms new transition team

The iconic Celtic Colours International Festival in Cape Breton has undergone a major change in leadership after a legal settlement was reached with the recently fired board of directors. The society that runs the festival has appointed a new six-person transition board of directors to take over the reins, effective December 7th.
The decision to dismiss the entire board of directors was made by members of the Celtic Colours Festival Society during a meeting on December 7th. Initially, the board challenged the decision, but they have now agreed to resign from their positions and allow the transition board to take over.
According to Halifax-based lawyer Ray Wagner, who represented the society, the society’s bylaws allowed for an emergency meeting to address issues concerning the society-appointed board. Wagner emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that preparations for the October festival could not wait until the new year.
The change in leadership comes after a tumultuous period for the 27-year-old festival, with five senior staff members resigning over the past year. Reports of venues not being properly maintained and poor treatment of customers have also surfaced, prompting the need for immediate action.
Society member Jacquelyn Scott, a former board chair, highlighted the challenges facing the new transition team, including addressing complaints of a toxic work environment. The transition board, led by Jennifer Currie, a veteran of the Cape Breton music scene, is optimistic about moving the festival forward until a new board of directors can be appointed in early 2025.
Currie expressed confidence in the society and stated that one of their priorities is to listen to the staff and address their concerns. The news of the agreement between the society and the former board of directors has sparked renewed interest from community members in getting involved with Celtic Colours.
Outgoing board chair Marcel McKeough offered his support and best wishes to the transition board and the society in a statement released following the settlement. The transition board is now tasked with addressing immediate priorities and working towards a successful festival in October.
