Conservatives rejoice over ‘jaw dropping’ Meta censorship announcement: ‘Huge win for free speech’
Conservatives on social media were quick to celebrate on Tuesday following the announcement that Meta had decided to end its controversial fact-checking practices and shift towards a system that prioritizes free speech. The news, first reported by Fox News Digital, revealed that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms, acknowledged that its current content moderation practices had gone too far and pledged to restore free expression.
GOP Sen. Rand Paul expressed his satisfaction with the decision, calling it a “great birthday present” and a significant victory for free speech. Others, like Independent Women’s Forum visiting fellow Lyndsey Fifield, praised Meta for recognizing the need to move away from biased third-party fact-checkers and towards a more open approach to content moderation.
The announcement came during an exclusive interview with Meta’s chief global affairs officer, Joel Kaplan, on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends.” Kaplan explained that Meta’s third-party fact-checking program, implemented after the 2016 election, had been used to manage content and combat misinformation but had ultimately become problematic. Conservatives had long criticized the platform for censoring content, citing examples like the suppression of the New York Post’s reporting on Hunter Biden’s laptop.
The decision to end fact-checking and implement a new system of community notes was met with widespread approval from conservatives on social media. Abigail Jackson, communications director for GOP Sen. Josh Hawley, credited the outcome to the election of former President Donald Trump, while journalist Jordan Schachtel commended Meta’s commitment to cleaning house.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, emphasized in a video message that the company would focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying policies, and promoting free expression. He also announced that moderation teams would be relocated from California to Texas, with the intention of minimizing bias in content moderation decisions.
