Sirens score power-play goal in OT to beat Victoire
The New York Sirens snapped a nine-game losing streak with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over the Montreal Victoire on Wednesday night in Newark, N.J. Maja Nylén Persson was the hero of the night, scoring a power-play goal in overtime to secure the much-needed win for New York.
This victory was a significant turnaround for the Sirens, who had not tasted victory since their 3-0 win over Ottawa on Jan. 27. The team’s record now stands at 4-4-4-10, giving them a much-needed boost of confidence.
Montreal, on the other hand, came into the game with a strong record of 10-6-2-5. The Victoire were coming off a 3-2 overtime win over Boston, showcasing their ability to excel in games that go beyond regulation. However, they were unable to maintain their winning streak against a determined New York team.
The game had its fair share of drama, with a lengthy delay in the third period when New York rookie Sarah Fillier was given a five-minute major for a cross check to the head of Erin Ambrose. Despite this setback, Montreal managed to capitalize on the power play, with Kati Tabin scoring to tie the game at 2-all.
Maureen Murphy also found the back of the net for Montreal, equalizing the score at 1-all early in the second period. However, New York took the lead in the first period with Abby Roque’s fifth goal of the season, showcasing their determination to end their losing streak.
Elizabeth Giguere had a chance to extend New York’s lead but missed a penalty shot. It was Fillier who ultimately sealed the victory for the Sirens with a rebound shot in the second period, giving her team a 2-1 lead.
The Sirens’ victory was a testament to their resilience and determination to overcome adversity. The win not only ended their losing streak but also highlighted their potential to compete against top teams like Montreal. With this momentum, New York looks to build on this win and continue their upward trajectory in the league standings.
