Dallas police won’t join ICE deportation raids, interim chief tells immigrant meetings

The Dallas Police Department (DPD) is taking proactive measures to reassure immigrant communities that they will not participate in deportation raids or arrests conducted by the Trump administration. Chief Michael Igo addressed concerns at a series of outreach meetings, emphasizing that the DPD will not assist federal agencies in detaining individuals, regardless of their immigration status.
During the meetings, Chief Igo made it clear that the DPD’s priority is to serve and protect all residents of Dallas, regardless of their background. He assured attendees that the department will not report or turn in anyone who is in the country illegally if they call 911 for help or are stopped for traffic violations. Chief Igo also emphasized that no arrests or raids will be carried out in sensitive locations such as churches, schools, or hospitals.
While the DPD is committed to enforcing city ordinances and state laws, Chief Igo reiterated that there is no room for fear in the community. He has been meeting with various stakeholders to reinforce the message that the DPD is dedicated to maintaining the safety and well-being of all Dallas residents.
This commitment to inclusivity and community safety aligns with the recent actions of newly appointed Attorney General Pam Bondi, who filed a lawsuit against the state of New York for allegedly failing to comply with federal immigration laws. The DPD’s stance on immigration issues reflects a broader trend among law enforcement agencies in major cities across the country.
In addition to addressing immigration concerns, the DPD has also reported a significant decrease in violent crime in Dallas. In 2024, the city saw an 8.2% reduction in violent crime, including a 26% decrease in murders compared to the previous year. These statistics indicate progress in enhancing public safety and reducing criminal activity in the city.
Overall, the DPD’s outreach efforts and commitment to community engagement demonstrate a proactive approach to addressing the needs and concerns of immigrant communities in Dallas. By fostering trust and communication, the department is working to create a safer and more inclusive environment for all residents.
