Florida A&M athletic director arrested for allegedly stealing more than $24,000

Florida A&M’s athletic director, Angela Suggs, has recently found herself in hot water after being arrested for allegedly stealing over $24,000 from her former employer. Suggs turned herself in at the Leon County Jail on Monday and is facing charges of felony grand theft and felony scheme to defraud. Additionally, she is also facing four counts of false claims on travel vouchers, which are considered misdemeanors in Florida.

The allegations against Suggs stem from her time as the CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation, where she is accused of using a corporate credit card for personal expenses, making wire transfers, cash withdrawals, and even making personal purchases at casinos during work trips. An investigation was launched last fall by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement after a criminal referral from the Florida Department of Commerce’s Inspector General.

It was discovered that Suggs allegedly falsified travel vouchers by filing them as meals or claiming they were accidental. She also reportedly never repaid the Florida Sports Foundation for these personal expenses. Despite the allegations, Suggs was hired by her alma mater, Florida A&M University, around the same time the investigation was launched. She has been CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation for the past seven years.

Interim Florida A&M President Timothy Beard issued a statement regarding the situation, stating that the university is aware of the allegations and is monitoring the situation closely. While the allegations are unrelated to Suggs’ duties at Florida A&M, the university will respond appropriately in the future.

In her new role at Florida A&M, Suggs made a significant hire by bringing on former NBA player Charlie Ward as the school’s next head basketball coach. Ward is aiming to lead the Rattlers to the NCAA Tournament, a feat they have not achieved in almost two decades.
