US Election 2024

Democrat Colin Allred targets Cornyn’s Senate seat after losing to Cruz

Former Texas Rep. Colin Allred is throwing his hat back into the political ring, announcing his candidacy for the U.S. Senate. Allred, a Democrat, previously lost to Republican Sen. Ted Cruz just eight months ago but is now setting his sights on challenging Republican Sen. John Cornyn. Cornyn is facing his own challenge from within the Republican Party, with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also vying for the seat.

In a campaign video released on Tuesday, Allred didn’t hold back in criticizing both Cornyn and Paxton, labeling them as “too corrupt to care about us and too weak to fight for us.” The former NFL linebacker turned attorney shared his personal story of resilience, highlighting how he overcame obstacles to achieve success, including buying his mother a house.

Allred emphasized his commitment to fighting corruption, stating, “Everything is backwards. Folks who play by the rules and keep the faith just can’t seem to get ahead. But the folks who cut corners and cut deals — well, they’re doing just fine.” He pledged to run on an “anti-corruption plan” and stressed his refusal to accept corporate PAC money or engage in stock trading during his time in Congress.

Despite his previous loss to Cruz, Allred remains undeterred, pointing out the flaws in the current political system and expressing his belief that change is possible. His decision to re-enter the Senate race comes as former astronaut Terry Virts also joins the Democratic candidates.

Allred’s journey from NFL player to congressman showcases his determination and ability to overcome challenges, making him a formidable contender in the upcoming election. With his focus on combating corruption and fighting for the interests of the people, Allred’s campaign is set to be a compelling and impactful force in Texas politics.
