US Election 2024

Lori Chavez-DeRemer moves on to final Senate confirmation vote

President Donald Trump’s Labor Secretary nominee, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, has advanced past her last procedural vote on Thursday, bringing her one step closer to becoming the secretary of the Department of Labor. The final confirmation vote is scheduled for next week, after she managed to secure bipartisan backing from the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP).

Initially, there was some uncertainty surrounding Chavez-DeRemer’s nomination, as Sen. Rand Paul had pledged to oppose her. However, she ultimately received 14 votes to advance from the committee last month, with 9 senators opposing. Notably, she garnered the support of Senators Maggie Hassan, John Hickenlooper, and Tim Kaine, among others.

In a statement announcing her support for Chavez-DeRemer, Senator Hassan emphasized the importance of the Department of Labor in supporting workers and small businesses. She expressed confidence in Chavez-DeRemer’s qualifications for the role and her commitment to working with her to benefit New Hampshire’s workers and small businesses.

During her confirmation hearing, Chavez-DeRemer faced questions about her past support for the controversial Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act. She clarified her position, stating that while she had previously supported the bill as a member of Congress, she recognized its imperfections and the need to update and modernize labor laws.

Chavez-DeRemer’s willingness to walk back her support for the PRO Act and her bipartisan backing in the Senate Committee signal a positive trajectory for her confirmation as Labor Secretary. Following her attendance at President Trump’s joint address to Congress, she expressed gratitude for the bipartisan support she had received and her commitment to serving the American workforce.
