DNC union launches ‘GoFundMe’ to help former employees hit by massive layoffs
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) union has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support staffers who were unexpectedly laid off last week, sparking outrage among those still employed by the DNC who see the cuts as a betrayal of party values.
The GoFundMe initiative aims to raise $25,000 to assist staff members who were impacted by the layoffs following the party’s losses in the 2024 election. According to the DNC staff union, two-thirds of DNC employees were let go with little notice and without receiving any severance pay.
In a statement on the GoFundMe page, DNC staff union organizer Jill Brownfield criticized DNC leadership for the layoffs, calling them “callous” and “short-sighted.” The union expressed disappointment in seeing their colleagues, who had worked tirelessly to elect Democrats, depart under such circumstances. They also condemned the lack of severance provided to those affected.
The relief fund created by the union aims to provide direct assistance to laid-off staff members, including single parents and expecting parents. The funds will be distributed equally among all laid-off members who choose to receive them, with the hope of alleviating some of the financial burdens they are facing.
The fundraising effort comes in the wake of the DNC’s announcement of layoffs last Wednesday, which drew sharp criticism from current DNC employees and union members. The union called on Democratic Party leadership to offer severance to all permanent employees who were laid off and to communicate transparently with remaining staff about the way forward.
As of now, the GoFundMe campaign has raised $15,453 out of its $25,000 goal. The DNC has not yet responded to inquiries about their efforts to address the union’s concerns or support affected employees during the transition.
