DOGE says millions saved after canceling more federal contracts

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has made significant strides in eliminating wasteful contracts, totaling 239 contracts with a combined ceiling value of $1.7 billion over a two-day period. This move has resulted in a savings of $400 million, as announced by a tweet from DOGE.

One of the terminated contracts included an $8.5 million consulting contract aimed at improving fiscal stewardship and program operations to drive innovation and efficiency in business services. The contract also focused on reshaping the workforce and enhancing program delivery through transformational initiatives.

In a bold move, the National Institutes of Health canceled several federal grants related to transgender and sexual identity research. This included a $699,000 grant for studying cannabis use among sexual minority gender diverse individuals and a $620,000 grant for an LGB+ inclusive teen pregnancy prevention program for transgender boys.

A notable cancellation was the $225,000 federal grant for the University of Colorado to study the effects of hormones on headaches in transmasculine adolescents. Additionally, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced the termination of a $379,000 USDA grant in the San Francisco Bay Area. This grant was intended to educate queer, trans, and BIPOC urban farmers and consumers about food justice and values-aligned markets.

Secretary Rollins emphasized the importance of refocusing the agency on its core mission of supporting American farming, ranching, and forestry by putting an end to wasteful spending and identity politics.

The actions taken by DOGE under the leadership of Elon Musk reflect a commitment to slashing billions in what is considered wasteful government spending. This proactive approach aligns with the goal of streamlining operations and ensuring that taxpayer dollars are used effectively.

As protests continue outside key government departments and agencies, it is clear that the initiatives undertaken by DOGE are not without controversy. However, the overarching objective of promoting efficiency and accountability in government spending remains a top priority.
