Elon Musk-backed bill to deport illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes to get House vote
The House of Representatives is gearing up to vote on a crucial bill next week that would require the deportation of illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes. This legislation, known as the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, was initially introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, and received bipartisan support when it passed the House last year. All Republican lawmakers backed the bill, along with 51 House Democrats.
Despite the House’s approval, the bill did not progress in the Senate, which was then controlled by Democrats. In response, Rep. Mace reintroduced the bill at the start of the new 119th Congress on Friday. The House GOP leaders plan to bring the bill to a vote next week, just before President-elect Trump’s inauguration.
Renowned billionaire Elon Musk recently voiced his support for the bill, criticizing Democrats who had opposed it in the past. Musk called for accountability, urging voters to hold elected officials responsible for their stance on deporting illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes.
Following the November elections, where Republicans retained control of the House and secured the White House and Senate, GOP lawmakers are wasting no time in pushing their agenda forward. Alongside the deportation bill, other conservative policies related to border security were introduced on the first day of the new Congress.
In addition to Rep. Mace’s bill, Reps. Chip Roy of Texas and Mike Collins of Georgia reintroduced their own legislation that had previously passed the House but did not receive Senate approval. Roy’s bill focuses on requiring proof of citizenship in the voter registration process, while Collins’s legislation aims to empower federal immigration authorities to detain and take custody of illegal aliens who commit theft-related crimes as defined by state and local laws.
The upcoming week is expected to see significant legislative activity in the House, with multiple bills on the agenda for consideration. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the House remains a hub of activity, shaping the direction of key policies and initiatives.
