Eric Adams calls for bipartisan solution to ‘broken immigration system’
The Biden administration’s decision to loosen key immigration restrictions has sparked outrage from New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who believes that Americans are “fed up with our broken immigration system.” The Department of Homeland Security’s plan to launch an ICE Portal app in December has raised concerns due to severe glitching issues and a lack of proper tracking features for migrants using Android phones or laptops. This comes as the administration faces criticism for setting a record high of 3.2 million illegal migrant entries in 2023.
Mayor Adams expressed frustration with the surge of over 220,000 migrants arriving in New York City since spring 2022, stating that cities should not bear the burden of a national problem. Kayla Altus, a spokesperson for Adams, emphasized the need for comprehensive immigration reform, calling on Democrats and Republicans to work together to address the issue. With the recent election results giving Republicans control of Congress, Altus believes that now is the time for meaningful reform.
In Laredo, Texas, Mayor Victor Trevino is preparing for a potential migrant surge before the end of the current administration. While the city has adequate resources for legal crossings, Trevino highlighted the challenges of handling unnatural surges and the lack of pediatric intensive care facilities for migrant children. Steven Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies pointed out the fiscal strain that sanctuary cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Denver are facing due to the influx of migrants.
Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, emphasized the human cost of sanctuary policies, citing tragic incidents like the murder of nursing student Laken Riley by an illegal immigrant. Vaughan called for an end to sanctuary policies, stating that there is no justification for putting public safety at risk.
Overall, the debate over immigration reform remains contentious, with stakeholders calling for a comprehensive solution to address the challenges faced by both migrants and communities. As the Biden administration navigates the complex issue of immigration, the need for bipartisan cooperation and meaningful reform becomes increasingly urgent.
