Escaped murderer Grant Hardin could survive for months in Ozarks, expert warns

A survivalist is urging caution to hikers and outdoor enthusiasts in the Ozarks of Arkansas as the search continues for escaped prisoner and former Gateway Police Department Chief Grant Hardin. Hardin, also known as the “Devil in the Ozarks,” fled from a medium-security prison in Calico Rock on May 25.
Shawn Hendrix, the survivalist issuing the warning, emphasized the potential dangers that Hardin poses to anyone in the area. Hardin, who was serving time for murder and rape, has shown little regard for human life in the past. Hendrix expressed concerns about the possibility of Hardin harming or potentially even killing individuals in the wilderness in order to survive.
Hardin escaped prison by wearing a makeshift uniform that was not official, according to the Arkansas Department of Corrections. He is described as a 6-foot White male, weighing approximately 259 pounds. With his extensive knowledge of the Ozark Mountain region, authorities believe he may be hiding in caves or rugged terrain that he is familiar with.
Hendrix highlighted the challenges of locating Hardin, noting that the vast wilderness of the Ozarks provides ample resources for survival. Natural food supplies such as berries, cattails, and fish, as well as access to water sources, could sustain Hardin for an extended period of time. However, Hendrix also pointed out the risks that come with living off the land, including the potential for foodborne illnesses or injuries that could prove fatal.
Authorities are actively searching for Hardin, with the FBI and U.S. Marshals offering a combined $25,000 reward for information leading to his capture. Despite unconfirmed sightings suggesting that Hardin may have left Arkansas, officials believe he is still in the Ozarks area. The search efforts are focused on concealed evidence of someone living in the woods, such as hidden fires or covered materials.
As the manhunt for Grant Hardin continues, hikers, campers, and hunters are advised to stay clear of the area and report any suspicious activity. The safety of individuals in the Ozarks remains a top priority as authorities work to locate and apprehend the escaped prisoner.
