New Heritage Minute celebrates Bora Laskin, namesake of Thunder Bay, Ont., law school

Michel Beaulieu, the associate vice-provost of academic and professor of history at Lakehead University, expressed his excitement over Historica Canada’s new Heritage Minute featuring Bora Laskin, calling it “long overdue.” Laskin, born in 1912 in Fort William (now Thunder Bay, Ont.), overcame antisemitism to become the first Jewish Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.
Beaulieu highlighted Laskin’s academic achievements and his forward-thinking approach to law, which focused on human rights issues. Appointed to the Supreme Court by former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Laskin’s work greatly influenced the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The Bora Laskin Faculty of Law at Lakehead University, named in his honor, reflects Laskin’s innovative approach to law, particularly in Indigenous law, resource law, and small practice. The law school, established in 2013, emphasizes the same values and principles that Laskin embodied throughout his career.
Laskin’s journey to success was not without challenges. As a Russian Jewish immigrant facing discrimination, he persevered to become a respected legal scholar. His contributions to Canadian law, including his dissenting opinions on important issues like Indigenous rights, continue to inspire current and future legal professionals.
Beyond his legal career, Laskin served as the chancellor of Lakehead University and left a lasting impact on Thunder Bay. His family members, including his brother Saul Laskin, also made significant contributions to the community.
As students pursue their legal education at Lakehead’s Faculty of Law, Beaulieu emphasized the importance of recognizing and honoring Laskin’s legacy. By following in Laskin’s footsteps and upholding his commitment to human rights, students can make a meaningful impact in their own legal careers.
Overall, the Heritage Minute featuring Bora Laskin serves as a reminder of his remarkable achievements and contributions to Canadian law. It is a testament to his enduring legacy and the values he championed throughout his career.
