Family welcomes baby boy during weekend snowstorm in New Glasgow, N.S.
NEW GLASGOW, N.S. — It’ll be a birthday to remember for the parents of newborn Brandon Breen.
As Tammy Stone, Brandon’s grandmother, describes it, he was already a little late making an appearance, with his due date originally being Jan. 29.
“She was due on the 29th of January, but there was no action,” Stone said.
Come Saturday night, Feb. 3, Mackenzie Bezenar, Stone’s daughter-in-law, started to feel pains sporadically throughout the night. The nurse hotline told her to take a bath and not worry about things, although it took a turn come Sunday morning.
Stone said that morning, her son called, telling her that Mackenzie’s water had broke and he needed help getting her to the hospital.
“Sunday morning, my son calls me at like 8:30 or 9 in the morning, something like that, and he says that Mackenzie’s water broke and contractions are coming pretty frequently,” she continued.
By Sunday morning, there was already several feet of snow on the ground, with more expected to accumulate throughout the day and into Monday. According to unofficial reports, New Glasgow received 75 centimetres of snow, while it was reported that Pictou Landing saw around 115 centimetres.
“He’s stuck in his yard, and the road is just impossible. So, he says, ‘Can I get the truck up?’ Of course, I wake up my partner and say, ‘We gotta go. We got to shovel the truck out. We got to go get the kids,’” she added.
After digging herself out and jumping in the truck with her partner, Stone drove from New Glasgow’s north end to meet her son, Kayden Breen, and Mackenzie. However, they couldn’t make it down their street and ended up having to meet them on East River Road.
“And God loves her; here she is called lover all keeled over pain. She’s walking out with a pillow and pyjamas, and that gets in the truck, and we get to the hospital and drop them off,” Stone said with a laugh.
From there, after bundling everyone into the truck, they made their way to the Aberdeen Hospital, where, later that evening, baby Brandon was born.
“It was a really interesting weekend, but it’s pretty great. The baby’s great, and everybody’s just wonderful.”
