Former Nova Scotia MLA Tony Ince appointed to Senate

Nova Scotia Welcomes Former Liberal MLA Tony Ince as Newest Senator

Nova Scotia’s Senate has welcomed its newest member, former Liberal MLA Tony Ince. Ince was one of five individuals appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating that he is honored and eager to contribute meaningfully in his new role.

Upon receiving the news of his appointment, Ince shared that Prime Minister Trudeau personally called him on Thursday night. This marks a significant milestone in Ince’s political career, as he transitions from his previous role as MLA for Cole Harbour-Portland Valley, a position he held from 2013 to 2024. Ince chose not to run in the provincial election last year.

During his time as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, Ince served in various cabinet positions, including Minister of African Nova Scotian Affairs and Minister of Communications Nova Scotia. His experience and expertise in these areas are expected to be valuable assets as he takes on his new responsibilities in the Senate.

Ince’s appointment is also noteworthy for increasing diversity within the Senate, as he becomes the second African Nova Scotian to hold a seat in the chamber. He joins Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard, who was appointed in 2016, in representing the African Nova Scotian community at the federal level.

Reflecting on his journey to this point, Ince expressed his gratitude towards those who have supported and influenced him along the way. He acknowledged the importance of diverse perspectives and ideas in shaping his identity and approach to public service.
