Former prosecutor slams delayed investigation in Elway golf cart death case
A former federal prosecutor in California has raised concerns about the handling of the investigation into John Elway’s golf cart incident, suggesting that the sheriff’s office may not be fully transparent or diligent in its duties. The incident occurred at the Madison Club in La Quinta, California, where Elway’s longtime friend and agent, Jeffrey Sperbeck, tragically fell off the back of a golf cart on March 26. Despite being rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Sperbeck succumbed to his injuries and passed away on Wednesday.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation into the incident, although Elway has not been charged with any crime. Reports indicate that Elway was driving the golf cart at the time of the incident, which occurred as he was leaving a Stagecoach after-party. Public records reveal that Elway owns a property just 10 minutes away from the Madison Club.
Surprisingly, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office only learned of the incident two days after it occurred. This delay has raised eyebrows, with former Assistant U.S. Attorney Neama Rahmani questioning the agency’s responsiveness and suggesting that there may be more to the story than meets the eye. He expressed concern that law enforcement did not immediately respond to the incident, describing the situation as “strange” and calling into question the integrity of the investigation.
In response to Rahmani’s comments, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco defended his office’s handling of the case, suggesting that the former prosecutor’s perspective may not align with the facts of the situation. The Sheriff’s Office has stated that it will take appropriate action based on the outcome of the investigation, which is still ongoing.
Following Sperbeck’s tragic passing, Elway issued a statement expressing his deep sorrow and grief over the loss of his close friend and business partner. Sperbeck’s family also released a statement, mourning the loss of a beloved father, husband, and friend to many. The close relationship between Elway and Sperbeck dates back to 1990 when Sperbeck became Elway’s manager, representing a number of NFL players and Hall of Famers throughout his career.
Elway has retained the services of Denver-based lawyer Harvey Steinberg in light of the investigation. The details of the incident, the circumstances surrounding Sperbeck’s death, and the actions taken by law enforcement remain under scrutiny as the investigation continues to unfold.
