Politicians call for prayer as devastating floods impact central Texas

Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas, has declared Sunday, July 6, a “Day of Prayer” in response to the devastating floods that have ravaged Texas, leading to the loss of at least 91 lives. In a proclamation, Abbott urged Texans of all faiths and backgrounds to come together in prayer for the healing of individuals, safety of first responders, rebuilding of communities, and restoration of the affected region.

During breakfast in Kerrville, Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, shared a video of a restaurant streaming a First Baptist service, showcasing the resilience and faith of the Texas community. “Prayer works,” Abbott emphasized, highlighting the power of collective prayer during times of hardship.

Amid the tragedy, former Texas congressman and 2020 presidential candidate, Democrat Beto O’Rourke, also called for prayers and donations to support those impacted by the floods. Additionally, Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, urged Texans to join in prayer as over 500 first responders continued their search for missing individuals.

Texas, known for its strong religious presence, with 67% of its population identifying as Christian, has turned to prayer as a source of comfort and hope during this challenging time. Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, encouraged prayers for the Hill Country and Camp Mystic, a private Christian summer camp for girls that tragically lost 27 campers and counselors in the flooding.

Camp Mystic, facing unimaginable loss, has found solace in prayer, with the camp’s website stating, “Our hearts are broken alongside our families that are enduring this unimaginable tragedy. We are praying for them constantly.” Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick shared a harrowing account of the camp counselor’s bravery in the face of danger, highlighting the courage and resilience displayed during the crisis.
