Georgia GOP expels former Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan over alleged disloyalty

The recent decision by the Georgia Republican Party’s State Executive Committee to expel former GOP Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan has sent shockwaves through the political landscape. The unanimous vote on Jan. 6 effectively severs all ties between Duncan and the party, citing his alleged efforts to undermine Republican candidates.

The resolution brought forward by the committee outlines several accusations against Duncan, including claims that he actively worked against GOP candidates, publicly endorsed Democratic opponents, and used his affiliation with the Republican Party for personal gain. These allegations have been a point of contention for years, leading to the final decision to cut ties with Duncan.

In response to the resolution, Duncan took to social media to express his disbelief, suggesting that the party’s time would be better spent focusing on more pressing issues. He called out Georgia GOP chair Josh McKoon, criticizing the decision to expel him.

As a result of the resolution, Duncan is now banned from all property owned or leased by the Georgia Republican Party and any events held under its authority. He is also prohibited from qualifying as a candidate for the party, with his previous nominations for lieutenant governor and state House of Representatives races being expunged.

The resolution also demands that Duncan refrain from using his Republican status for personal profit or to undermine the party and its candidates. Media outlets have been urged to refer to him as an “expelled Republican” in future references.

The resolution further accuses Duncan of undermining and sabotaging fellow Republican candidates, including current Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and former Senate candidate Herschel Walker. It highlights Duncan’s public endorsements of President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential race as a violation of his allegiance to the GOP.

Georgia Republican Party chair McKoon had previously called on Duncan to stop using his Republican credentials in public and media appearances. The resolution also alleges that Duncan made false and exaggerated claims about his education and career and used his position as a CNN commentator to attack the Republican Party.

The expulsion of Duncan from the Georgia Republican Party marks a significant chapter in the ongoing political divisions within the party. The decision has sparked debate and raised questions about loyalty and accountability within the GOP.
