Germans hold top 3 spots midway through 2-man world bobsleigh championship

The world of sliding sports, including bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge, has seen its fair share of dominant performances over the years. One interesting stat that stands out is the 59 instances where sliders from one country have swept the podium at major events like the Olympics or world championships. While Austria and Poland have achieved this feat on a few occasions, the overwhelming majority of these sweeps belong to German sliders.

At the ongoing two-man world bobsleigh championships in Lake Placid, it seems like history is set to repeat itself. German sliders Francesco Friedrich, Johannes Lochner, and Adam Ammour currently hold the top three spots after the first two heats of the competition. Friedrich and his teammate Alexander Schuller are leading the pack with a time of 1:49.75, followed closely by Lochner and Georg Fleischhauer in second place, and Ammour and Benedikt Hertel in third.

Friedrich, a multiple-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist, is no stranger to success on the ice. With his unparalleled experience and skill, he is looking to add another title to his impressive resume. As he aptly puts it, “The third run is the decision.” The final two runs of the competition will determine if he can secure his ninth world two-man title.

While the Germans are dominating the top spots, there are other contenders in the mix. American pilots Frank Del Duca and Charlie Volker are hot on the heels of the leaders, hoping to break the German stronghold and claim a medal for the U.S. Del Duca is aiming to become the first American men’s pilot to win a medal at worlds since 2013.
