Ex-Ontario MPP who became homeless says it’s ‘humbling’ politicians rallying to move him out of shelter

Former Toronto city councillor and MPP Lorenzo Berardinetti’s unexpected experience of finding himself homeless last year shed light on the harsh reality faced by many in the Toronto area. After a 30-year political career, Berardinetti fell on hard times due to unemployment and medical issues, leading him to seek shelter in Ajax, Ont.

Reflecting on his initial disbelief at his situation, Berardinetti shared his astonishment at the precariousness of life in the city. He highlighted that many others at the shelter came from professional backgrounds, emphasizing the widespread nature of the issue.

Following a report by the Toronto Star on Berardinetti’s circumstances, a wave of support from Ontario politicians ensued. Justin Van Dette, a former political staffer, spearheaded an online fundraising campaign to help Berardinetti secure housing. The campaign garnered significant donations, enabling Berardinetti to plan his rehousing with the help of $25,000 raised.

Berardinetti’s journey took a turn for the better as he received medical clearance to return to work and embarked on renewing his law license. With plans to establish his legal practice and write a book, Berardinetti expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from politicians across party lines.

Notably, donations poured in from politicians like former mayor John Tory, ex-premiers Kathleen Wynne and Dalton McGuinty, Conservative MPP Lisa McLeod, and Toronto councillors Brad Bradford and Parthi Kandavel. Berardinetti was moved by the bipartisan compassion displayed through contributions from his political opponents.

As he prepares to meet with a real estate agent to explore new accommodations, Berardinetti’s story serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by individuals transitioning out of public service. The additional funds raised through the campaign will be used to support other politicians navigating retirement struggles, illustrating a collective commitment to aiding those in need.
