Hiker who survived 50 days in northeast B.C. woods released from hospital

The miraculous survival story of 20-year-old Sam Benastick, who spent 50 days lost in the wilderness of northeastern B.C., has captured the attention of people around the world. Benastick’s ordeal began on October 7 when he set out on what was supposed to be a 10-day fishing trip to Redfern-Keily Provincial Park. However, he soon found himself lost and alone in the vast and unforgiving wilderness.

According to Mike Reid, the general manager of the Buffalo Inn in Pink Mountain, B.C., Benastick and his family stopped by to visit him after being discharged from care in Fort Nelson. Reid recounted how Benastick had survived by rationing a single jar of peanut butter for the last 20 days of his ordeal. Despite the harsh conditions and the constant threat of predators such as wolves and bears, Benastick managed to stay alive until he was finally rescued on November 26.

Benastick’s family, including his parents and brother, had been tirelessly searching for him in the park after he was reported missing on October 19. The search efforts were extensive, with search and rescue crews scouring the area by air and on foot. Tim Bigfoot, a member of the Prophet River First Nation who assisted in the search, described the park as one of the most isolated places in B.C., with treacherous terrain and unpredictable weather conditions.

The circumstances of Benastick’s disappearance and survival remain somewhat mysterious, as he has not yet spoken publicly about his ordeal. However, it is believed that he initially stayed in his car for a few days before setting up camp in a dried-out creek bed. He was eventually found by industrial workers who were passing through the area and flagged them down for help.

Despite the challenges he faced, including sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall, Benastick’s survival is nothing short of miraculous. His mother, Sandra Crocker, had expressed concern about his trip to the remote wilderness area, but Benastick had reassured her that he was well-prepared for any situation. His resourcefulness and resilience undoubtedly played a crucial role in his ability to endure such a harrowing experience.

As Benastick continues to recover from his ordeal, the details of his survival will likely come to light. For now, his story serves as a reminder of the indomitable human spirit and the power of hope in the face of adversity.
