Colorado man given life for DUI that killed Air Force veteran, injured children

A tragic incident in Colorado last year has led to a man being sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a USAF veteran. Paul Stephenson, 57, was found guilty of first-degree murder after he killed Lt. Col. Matt Anderson while driving drunk in August 2024. Stephenson crashed his truck into Anderson’s vehicle, killing him and injuring his four children.
Stephenson, who admitted to drinking heavily before getting behind the wheel, was sentenced to life in prison plus 92 years. This was his third DUI conviction, and District Attorney George Brauchler stated that the first-degree murder charge was pursued to send a strong message to drunk drivers in Douglas County.
Anderson had just left the Douglas County Fair with his family when the tragic incident occurred. Brauchler emphasized the seriousness of the crime, stating that justice was served one day before July Fourth, noting the bitter coincidence of losing a patriot to drunk driving.
The sentencing was a significant moment for Anderson’s family, providing them with some closure. Senior Deputy District Attorney Nate Marsh praised the jury’s decision, highlighting the extreme indifference Stephenson showed towards human life. Marsh stated that the life sentence ensures Stephenson will not harm anyone else.
Brauchler also acknowledged Douglas County’s aggressive stance on drunk driving, emphasizing the importance of preventing similar tragedies in the future. The verdict serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of driving under the influence and the need for strict consequences for such reckless behavior.
The case serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of drunk driving and the devastating impact it can have on innocent lives. It also highlights the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and ensuring justice is served for the victims and their families.
