‘Wall of fire’ in Nopiming park brings ‘devastating’ end to friends’ camping trip

Two Winnipeg friends had set out on a camping trip to Nopiming Provincial Park with their young sons, hoping to recreate cherished memories of childhood backcountry adventures. Eric Gauthier and Pascal Breton were enjoying the peaceful beauty of Garner Lake near the Ontario border when their trip took a terrifying turn.
As they were fishing at their campsite, a lightning strike near Bird River, about 60 kilometres away, sparked a fast-spreading wildfire that was detected on Monday. The group was completely unaware of the approaching danger until a helicopter flew overhead, signaling an evacuation order for Nopiming park.
Conservation officers swiftly evacuated Gauthier, Breton, and their sons from the area as the wildfire closed in around them. They were among the 13 people rescued by Manitoba wildfire and conservation officials in a dramatic operation.
The group had been blissfully unaware of the escalating situation, enjoying their time camping, fishing, and grilling steaks on the barbecue. Their peaceful retreat turned into a rescue mission as they were flown out of the region to safety.
For Gauthier, who had first visited Nopiming park as a teenager, it was heartbreaking to witness one of his favorite places engulfed in flames. The devastation of potentially losing the park, a special and cherished place, weighed heavily on his heart.
Breton, who had been visiting the park for 36 years since his first backcountry camping trip with his father and uncle, feared for the future of the beloved location. The memories of summers spent in the wilderness may soon be overshadowed by the charred remains left by the wildfire.
The fire also destroyed their friend’s cabin on Beresford Lake, leaving only the wood stove standing amidst the rubble. Gauthier and Breton each lost a truck parked outside the cabin, adding to the losses suffered during the wildfire.
As the Nopiming wildfire continued to rage, reaching over 100,000 hectares in size, firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze. Despite challenging weather conditions, efforts were being made to suppress the fire and protect structures in the area.
Gauthier emphasized the importance of informing someone of your camping plans, highlighting how their friend’s vigilance had played a crucial role in ensuring their safe return. Breton expressed gratitude towards their friend, the rescuers, and the brave firefighters battling the wildfire.
The resilience and dedication of those involved in the rescue efforts were commended by Breton, underscoring the courage and selflessness displayed in the face of adversity. As the community rallied together to support those affected by the wildfire, hope remained for the restoration and recovery of Nopiming Provincial Park.
