ICE reveals sanctuary jurisdictions that have released the most criminal aliens

The latest data from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency reveals a troubling trend of sanctuary jurisdictions refusing detainer requests, leading to the release of over 25,000 illegal immigrants in recent years. Shockingly, among those released were 72 criminal aliens with homicide convictions or charges, highlighting the serious consequences of non-compliance with federal immigration authorities.

According to ICE data provided to the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), 17 of these releases occurred at just three detention centers, with Illinois River Corrections Center and Santa Clara County jails each releasing six individuals, and the Stateville Correctional Center in Illinois releasing five. This alarming information comes amidst a heated debate over sanctuary policies, which limit or ban local cooperation with ICE.

President Donald Trump has been vocal in his criticism of sanctuary jurisdictions, recently threatening to withhold federal funding from cities and states that continue to protect criminal illegal immigrants. With over half of declined detainer requests coming from California alone, it is evident that certain states are not fully cooperating with federal immigration enforcement efforts.

While California, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Connecticut were identified as states with a significant number of declined detainers, the lack of compliance is a cause for concern. Alfonso Aguilar, the director of Hispanic engagement at the American Principles Project, expressed shock at the high number of refusals in California, calling on Governor Gavin Newsom and other state leaders to be held accountable for their actions.

The ICE data highlighted Santa Clara County Main Jail as the facility with the highest number of declined detainers, releasing nearly 3,000 criminal aliens between 2022 and 2025. Additionally, Cook County Jail in Illinois and Fairfax County Adult Detention Center in Virginia were also responsible for releasing a significant number of criminal aliens, despite ICE detainer requests.

The refusal to comply with ICE detainers and the subsequent release of criminal illegal immigrants pose a significant risk to public safety, as these individuals may continue to commit crimes within their communities. Aguilar emphasized the importance of prioritizing public safety and enforcing immigration laws to protect citizens from potential harm.

As the debate over sanctuary policies continues to unfold, it is crucial for state and local leaders to prioritize the safety and well-being of their constituents. By working in collaboration with federal authorities and upholding immigration laws, jurisdictions can create a safer environment for all residents.
