Israel faces possible early elections as Netanyahu coalition teeters

Israel is currently facing a significant political crisis that threatens to bring down Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition. The crisis stems from tensions over military conscription exemptions for ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) men, a long-standing issue that has come to a head amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Recent polls in Israel suggest that Netanyahu’s coalition would likely lose power if elections were held today. The exemption of Haredi men from military service, while most Israelis are required to serve, has been a contentious issue, particularly in light of the current conflict in Gaza. The policy of granting exemptions to Haredi men is increasingly seen as unsustainable and discriminatory.
The crisis intensified following a massacre on October 7, which further fueled resentment towards the Haredi draft exemptions. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) estimates that there are approximately 60,000 ultra-Orthodox men of conscription age, adding to the urgency of resolving the issue.
In March, Israel’s Supreme Court ruled the draft exemptions unconstitutional and called for a resolution. However, Netanyahu’s coalition, heavily reliant on the ultra-Orthodox parties Shas and United Torah Judaism, remains divided. The Haredi parties are demanding new legislation to enshrine the exemptions in law, threatening to leave the coalition if their demands are not met.
If the ultra-Orthodox parties withdraw their support, Netanyahu’s coalition could collapse, potentially leading to early elections. Netanyahu is currently eyeing October 21, 2025, as a possible election date, but the situation remains precarious. The opposition party Yesh Atid has introduced a bill to dissolve the Knesset, set for a vote on June 11, which could further destabilize the government.
Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has also announced a political comeback with a new party, potentially shifting the political landscape. Israeli media polls suggest that Bennett could win a significant number of seats if elections were held today, potentially surpassing Netanyahu’s Likud party.
The political crisis in Israel is a complex issue that underscores the deep divisions within the country. The outcome of the current situation remains uncertain, with the possibility of early elections looming. Netanyahu’s coalition is facing a critical test, as the future of the government hangs in the balance.
