The Department of National Defence (DND) says two people are missing and another two are in hospital after a CH-147 Chinook helicopter crashed into the Ottawa River near an eastern Ontario Canadian Army base during a training flight early Tuesday morning.

The incident happened around 12:10 a.m. ET Tuesday “near the Ottawa River in the vicinity of Garrison Petawawa,” according to a tweet from the Royal Canadian Air Force.

The two missing people are members of 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron, according to a news release from DND. Four people were on board when it crashed, it said, with the other two found by first responders and taken to hospital.

DND did not say what condition the two injured people are in.

First responders at work in the area include military members, Ontario provincial police and local firefighters.

The military says this type of helicopter is used to move people and equipment.

Garrison Petawawa is about 150 kilometres northwest of downtown Ottawa. DND has asked boaters to avoid the river near the base and its Black Bear Beach to avoid “potentially hazardous materials from the aircraft” and preserve the crash scene.
