Klobuchar hit with ‘Community Note’ on X after backlash from Jan 6 claim about ‘killed’ officer: ‘Just sick’
Minnesota Democrat Sen. Amy Klobuchar is facing backlash from both X users and the platform itself after her recent post about the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol Hill riot. In her post, Klobuchar claimed that police officers were “injured and killed” during the violent mob attack.
Klobuchar’s post on X read, “Four years ago, the electoral vote certification was interrupted by a violent mob. Police officers were injured and killed. Our democracy hung in the balance. I knew we had to do our duty and complete the count – and in the early hours of January 7th, we did.”
However, X quickly flagged Klobuchar’s post with a “Community Note” stating that “No officers were killed.” The platform clarified that Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick died of natural causes, suffering two strokes the day after he confronted rioters on Jan. 6. Additionally, four other officers committed suicide in the days to months following the riot.
Conservative commentators and writers were quick to call out Klobuchar for spreading misinformation. Dana Loesch pointed out that “Zero police officers were killed,” while Bonchie emphasized that “No police officers were killed” and questioned why politicians continue to lie about the events of Jan. 6.
Mollie Hemingway of The Federalist criticized Klobuchar for spreading false information, stating, “It is so sick to see people lie about who was killed.” Others, such as Federalist Election Correspondent Brianna Lyman, highlighted the fact that only one person, Trump supporter Ashli Babbitt, was killed during the riot.
As the controversy surrounding Klobuchar’s post continues to grow, calls for her to be censured for spreading false information have emerged. Despite the backlash, Klobuchar’s office has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.
In light of the facts presented by the Washington D.C. medical examiner and law enforcement officials, it is important to ensure that accurate information is shared regarding the events of Jan. 6, 2021. Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick’s death was determined to be from natural causes, and it is crucial to distinguish between fact and misinformation in discussions surrounding the Capitol Hill riot.
