Leafs forward Max Domi fined $5,000

NHL Fines Max Domi $5,000 for Elbowing Incident

The National Hockey League has imposed a $5,000 fine on Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi for elbowing Philadelphia Flyers’ Garnet Hathaway during a recent game. The incident occurred in the third period of the Maple Leafs’ 3-2 overtime victory on Sunday.

Domi was penalized with an elbowing minor for his actions against Hathaway at 5:08 of the third period. This comes after Hathaway was involved in a fight with Jake McCabe earlier in the game, resulting in McCabe being unable to continue due to an upper-body injury.

In the first period, McCabe and Hathaway engaged in a physical altercation after Hathaway collided with Leafs goaltender Dennis Hildeby. Despite McCabe attempting to defend his teammate, he ended up on the receiving end of the fight, ultimately sustaining an injury that forced him to be placed on injured reserve by the Leafs.

Domi’s actions in targeting Hathaway’s head with his elbow in the third period led to the league’s decision to fine him the maximum amount allowed under the collective bargaining agreement. The fine will contribute to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund, supporting players in need.

As a result of his injury, McCabe will be sidelined for multiple games, with his earliest possible return set for January 14 when the Maple Leafs face the Dallas Stars at home. This means McCabe will miss upcoming games against the Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes, and Vancouver Canucks.

This update on the NHL fine and injury status was originally reported by The Canadian Press on January 6, 2024.
