Legacy of love: Father Andre Poilievre remembered as educator, counsellor, youth advocate
Father Andre Poilievre, known affectionately as Father Andre on the streets, passed away at the age of 88 earlier this week. Poilievre dedicated his life to working with at-risk youth and gang members, leaving a lasting impact on the community he served.
Despite his title as a priest, Poilievre was not one to adhere to traditional religious attire. He could often be seen in casual clothing like ball caps, sweaters, and windbreakers, driving his half-ton truck around town. His approach to his faith was defined by his actions, rather than his appearance.
Colleagues and community members remember Poilievre as a true advocate who was unafraid to challenge the system. Don Meikle, the executive director of EGADZ, recalls Poilievre as someone who was not afraid to go against the grain and stand up for what he believed in.
Born in Prud’homme, Saskatchewan, Poilievre’s journey led him to become a Catholic priest and later work with at-risk youth and gang members in Saskatoon. In 2002, he co-founded STR8 UP, a program that offers support and resources to individuals looking to leave behind a life of crime. Poilievre’s work with STR8 UP and his dedication to helping those in need earned him recognition and respect from his community.
One of Poilievre’s closest colleagues, Stan Tu’Inukafe, remembers him as a compassionate and non-judgmental individual who always put others first. Together, they founded STR8 UP and worked to give a voice to those who had been silenced by their circumstances.
Despite initial reservations about working with researchers, Poilievre eventually formed relationships with individuals like Robert Henry, an associate professor at the University of Saskatchewan. Henry recalls Poilievre’s unwavering commitment to building relationships with young people struggling with the challenges of street life.
Father Andre Poilievre’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched and the organizations he helped establish. His relentless love and hope continue to inspire those working to make a positive impact in their communities.
