Local angler catches nearly metre-long muskie in Toronto Harbour

A Rare Catch: Angler Reels in Muskie in Toronto Harbour
A local angler, Dylan Sampson, had a once-in-a-lifetime catch in the Toronto Harbour back in December. The unexpected catch of a muskie, a rare species in the area, left Sampson in awe.
According to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), this was only the second recorded muskie catch in Lake Ontario near Toronto in the last 30 years. The other angler who caught a muskie in the same area was actually Sampson’s twin brother, making it a remarkable coincidence.
\”When I saw the pattern, I knew right away it was not a pike,\” Sampson said, recalling the moment he realized he had hooked a muskie.
The fish measured a impressive one meter in length and weighed around nine kilograms. After capturing a few photos to commemorate the moment, Sampson made the decision to release the fish back into its natural habitat.
Sampson’s excitement and passion for fishing is evident in a YouTube video filmed by his friend and filmmaker, Darin Morrison-Beer, who captured the thrilling moment on camera.
The TRCA has been actively working to rehabilitate the Toronto Harbour by implementing measures such as habitat restoration and improving water quality. These efforts have created a more conducive environment for top predators like muskies to thrive in the Toronto waters once again.
\”I’ve gone out with him and he’s taught me so much … he was in complete awe when he saw that muskie and it inspired me to get out as well,\” Sampson mentioned, highlighting the impact his brother had on his fishing journey.
Sampson sees this rare catch as motivation to continue pursuing his love for fishing. \”My line has gotten stronger, my lures have gotten bigger, and I’m going to get another one,\” he declared with determination.
