Environment and Climate Change Canada investigating 8 possible tornadoes across Saskatchewan

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has launched an investigation into reports of eight possible tornadoes that may have touched down across southern Saskatchewan on Thursday. The reports span from the Saskatoon area to towns east of Estevan, indicating a significant event that is not commonly seen in the region.

Crawford Luke, a meteorologist with ECCC, emphasized that the events are still under investigation and no official confirmation has been made regarding the tornadoes. However, he noted that having eight tornadoes in a single day would be quite substantial and uncommon. The storms were triggered by a sharp trough moving across the province, causing a sudden wind shift that acted as a catalyst for thunderstorms.

The suspected tornadoes occurred in various locations, including near Young southeast of Saskatoon, and in the communities of Davin, Odessa, and Hubbard near Regina. Additionally, four tornadoes were reported in the southeast near Frobisher and Hirsch, east of Estevan. ECCC is utilizing multiple sources for their investigations, including storm spotters, storm chasers, and radar data.

Saskatchewan has already seen four confirmed tornadoes this year, with two occurring on June 2 near Cut Knife and two on June 13 near Coleville and Hepburn. Luke mentioned that it is challenging to predict whether this summer will be particularly active in terms of tornado activity. He reminded the public that while there is currently no immediate threat of tornadoes, the season is far from over, with the potential for more severe thunderstorm days ahead.

Residents are encouraged to share photos, videos, or damage reports with ECCC to assist in confirming the events on the ground. Luke also provided advice on what to do in the event of a tornado warning, emphasizing the importance of seeking shelter on the lowest floor and in the most interior part of a building.

One of the most dramatic storm visuals on Thursday came from Saskatoon, where a video showed a powerful lightning strike downtown. The same storm complex that may have produced the tornado near Young also brought the lightning show through the city.

Kayla Chamberlin and Shawn Hanofski, residents near Hubbard, Saskatchewan, shared their experience of witnessing a tornado touch down in their yard. They described the terrifying moments leading up to the tornado striking their property and the chaos that ensued. Despite the damage to their property, they expressed gratitude that their livestock survived and that no one was injured.

Chamberlin reflected on the support they have received from the community in the aftermath of the tornado, highlighting the resilience and unity that emerges during challenging times. As they begin the cleanup process, they are reminded of the importance of valuing the safety of loved ones above all else.
