Michigan’s Sherrone Moore expected to be suspended 2 games: report

The Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal has cast a shadow over the Michigan football program, with repercussions expected to impact the Wolverines in the upcoming 2025 season. Head coach Sherrone Moore is facing a two-game suspension next season for his alleged failure to cooperate in the NCAA’s investigation into Michigan’s sign-stealing practices under former coach Jim Harbaugh in 2023, as reported by The Associated Press.
The suspension is anticipated to affect the Wolverines’ third and fourth games of the season, with matchups against Central Michigan at home on September 13 and a road game at Nebraska the following week. Additionally, Michigan has reportedly imposed a self-sanction that has yet to be disclosed, further adding to the turmoil surrounding the program.
The scandal, which rocked college football during the 2023 season when the Wolverines went undefeated, revolves around allegations that the team illegally obtained opponents’ play signals. While the NCAA does not explicitly prohibit stealing signs from the sidelines, certain practices such as sending scouts to future opponents’ games and using electronic devices to record signals are strictly forbidden.
Former staffer Connor Stalions, who allegedly orchestrated the sign-stealing operation, purchased tickets to games featuring Michigan’s upcoming opponents and deployed individuals to record signals on the sidelines. Stalions, who resigned from his position at Michigan, did not participate in the NCAA’s investigation.
Before taking over as head coach, Moore served as an assistant under Harbaugh and was accused of deleting text messages with Stalions, which were later recovered and provided to the NCAA. Despite these allegations, Moore has maintained his cooperation with the NCAA’s ongoing investigation.
Following an 8-5 record in his first full season as head coach, Moore has high expectations for the Wolverines in 2025, especially after a successful recruiting class. Michigan is poised to be a strong contender in the Big Ten conference and will kick off their season against New Mexico State on August 30.
